It's Sunday

I spend almost every Sunday thinking about school and the plan for the week.  Since, I'm currently obsessed with the olympic games, I'm going to print out a world map for each of my little thirdies and we are going to color in the countries that have already won a medal.  I'm thinking that we should use gold, silver, and bronze crayons for this activity.

Last week, we did a lot of work with area and perimeter.  A lot of third graders get these two concepts mixed up,  so we made a cool bulletin board together.

Area and Perimeter
And guess what?  They still mixed the two up on the test.  grrrrr.........

I stayed home and watched Harrison run yesterday.  He ran one race.  It was over in 4 minutes and 40 seconds.  I totally could have driven to Evansville and watched the twins play hockey, but I didn't.  I came home and took a long nap instead.  This is not like me at all.  One of these days, the boys will be done with hockey and I'm going to be sad that I don't have a game to attend.

Unrelated random thoughts running through my head, like a freight train.

1.  I really want to see One Republic perform in August
2.  Henry and Hayden lost both games yesterday
3.  We are going to see the Lego Movie today
4.  I'm going through an insomnia phase :(
5.  I made grits for breakfast
6.  33 days until spring break
7.  this is weird
8.  I'm sick of winter
9.  I have been having some really strange dreams

Olympics

I watched the opening ceremony last night.  It was really beautiful, but I couldn't ignore the comments about Putin and his anti-gay laws.  blah...  I really love the Olympics and I want to enjoy them, but I also don't want to ignore the current civil rights movement that is happening in the world.  I read about a man that was tackled by the Russian police because he held up his rainbow pride flag during an olympic ceremony.  Hopefully, the athletes will enjoy their time in Sochi and forget about the world and all of its nonsense for awhile.  That's what sports and recreation is all about anyway.  Taking off and losing yourself in the moment.

I watched the Canadian women play hockey this morning on MSNBC.  I've been talking to my little 3rd graders about the olympics and how women were not allowed to compete at first.  I've been showing them clips of the olympics to get them interested.  After we watched the American bobsled team take off, I showed them a short clip of Cool Runnings.   They really loved that.  I'm going to introduce them to Apolo Anton Ohno, Mary Lou Retton, Muhammad Ali, and Usain Bolt next week.    I'm also going to introduce them to Inge Sorenson.  She was 12 years old when she won a bronze medal in the olympic games.

Harrison has a meet today and Henry and Hayden are playing hockey in Evansville.  Hope my Streib boys have a good day competing.

Henry is snoring

I can't sleep. My head is pounding. Hayden's music is blasting from his room. He listens to B97 every night. "Hey There Delilah" is playing now. Henry is sleeping with me and he is snoring away. I secretly love when he comes and gets in bed with me. Every time he does, I think, this will be the last time and it scares me.  These boys are almost 12. Ugh. Time sure does fly.

I helped Henry fill out his ALPS application tonight. It was due last Friday. He had to have a writing sample to send in with his application, so we quickly picked a topic, hockey, of course and created a plan. I thought some of his sentences could have used some editing, but the kid is stubborn as a mule.  I was only allowed to type what he told me to type.

We watched the Super Bowl with a bunch of friends tonight. The game was a bust, but everyone seemed to have fun anyway.  Well, except the one serious Broncos fan in the room. He gave up on the game and left the room, but first he had to take the big football balloon outside and destroy it. Being a Cubs fan, I can relate.  I had to beg Hayden to come and watch the half time show.  He loves Bruno Mars, so I thought he would love it, but he thought it was lame. The Red Hot Chili Peppers performed with him. They all look exactly the same, especially Flea.

Tomorrow, I'm going to introduce the poem Noise Day by Shel Silverstein to my reading group. I'm super excited about teaching them this cute poem.  I hope they love it.  I also have an area and perimeter poem to sing during math time. Speaking of math, if Henry gets his 7th grade math homework out at 10:00pm one more time, I'm going to beat him.  I can't think before 8am or after about 9:30 and I think I need glasses.

Harrison is constantly playing his DS and doing something on his phone these days. He can now do two things at once.  I never thought that would be possible. He has to take the SAT soon. I hope he does well on it. I want him to get into a good school.
