My class gets together every Friday with our first grade reading buddies. This sometimes becomes the longest 30 minutes of the entire week! My class is crazy wild, but these first graders take the cake. There is one little guy that stands out in this crowd. He has a smirky smile that has I AM TROUBLE written all over it. This is the conversation that transpired at my classroom door on Friday.
Crazy 1st Grader: Can you take your teeth out?
Me: Nope, but my mom can!
Crazy 1st Grader: MY MOM CAN TOO!!!
We are BFF's now...

The Search
I spent several hours last night searching for a little second grader that got lost in the woods around his house. He was on the twin's hockey team last year and we went trick or treating with him last Halloween. There were hundreds of people there, mostly Blades hockey families, searching for this kid. The police brought search dogs and a helicopter to help find him. We walked up and down ravines for hours and then, the police sirens came on. This meant that they had found him and we were all supposed to report back to the house. Even though we were only about ten minutes away when the sirens came on, it seemed like a two hour walk back to that house.
It was 1:45 in the morning and 33 degrees. He had been in the woods alone for almost 8 hours at that point. Some of my friends and a teacher that I work with, found him. He was cold and tired, but ok. They said, that he wanted to know why everyone was at his house! It took me forever to calm down when I got home. I held the twins tightly all night and hugged Harrison several times this morning before I dropped him off at school.
Blades parents and players from every age group came running, in the middle of the night, to help find this little hockey player. There were parents from every age group out there looking for him. It's nice to be a part of this Bloomington Blades family.

Big Heads
Henry and I watched the IU women get spanked by Purdue tonight. Henry was very excited when they brought the Big Heads out. He wanted Woody, but he got Stewie. He's not allowed to watch Family Guy, so he told me that he was a little embarrassed to be holding Stewie.
I'm glad that Henry likes to go to all these sporting events with me. I would be lost without him. I love this little guy!

Flippin Common Assessments
I sometimes use the word flippin at school, mostly when I get frustrated. I say things like, "is anyone going to get this flippin assignment done on time?" or "give me that flippin airplane!" Sometimes I mix it up a little and say, "ok, today we have a spelling test and we also have a flippin-flappin math test!" Apparently, I've been using this word way too much lately. It was kind of a crazy, busy week though. We had common assessments for both ELA and math, 52 meetings, a big artful learning deadline, and I was flippin exhausted from my run last weekend.
I have this super amazing kid in my class that always makes me smile or laugh. He told me at the end of the day yesterday that his backpack was flippin heavy! I said, um, well, you really shouldn't say that word. Then he ran out of the door to catch his bus. After he left, I graded his common assessment. The prompt asked the students to write about something fun that they like to do.

Goofy
I talked to a lot of people this past weekend. Some of those people were Goofy. I mean they were there to do the Goofy Challenge. This means that they ran the half on Saturday and the full on Sunday! They got the Donald Duck medal, the Mickey Mouse medal, and an extra Goofy medal. They ran 39.3 miles in 2 days! These people are crazy and amazing! Harrison wants to do the Goofy challenge next year. I'm registering us as soon as I can! I might do the full next year. The half was fun, but I want the Mickey Mouse medal.
We all had good runs. Harrison did great! I'm so proud of him!

2012
It's french fry time, people! My year without french fries was hard, but I lived to tell about it. There were only a few times, about ten, that I really craved fries. When I say craved, I mean, I couldn't stop thinking about them for hours! This year's resolution will be different however. NO CHIPS, of any kind, for an entire year. Are you kidding me? Thank goodness my friend Leeway decided to take on this challenge with me, because I'm going to need some support. My first mission is to find something that is good to eat with guacamole. I'm also trying to decide if taco shells and enchiladas are off of the table??? Wouldn't that be cheating?
RUN UPDATE: I went for a run today and it felt pretty damn good! I ran 5 miles in 65 minutes. That's 13 minute miles. If I can maintain that, I will finish the race in about 2 hours and 50 minutes. My leg is a little sore, but not hurting like the other day.
Happy New Year!
